Frequently Asked Questions
1. If I start going to a chiropractor, do I have to go for the rest of my life?
First, many people choose to come to a chiropractor due to an injury or chronic pain. Once chiropractic treatment helps to resolve the injury or get the chronic condition to maximal improvement, there is no obligation to receive further care.
However, reaching your potential of the full expression of health can be defined as the optimal function of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being. We are all on a spectrum with disease and death on one finite end and infinite health potential going in the opposite direction. Health is not just the absence of symptoms. So, it is always up to the patient whether he/she wants to further care to help achieve better function and health. That can include chiropractic care beyond symptom care. But it is always the patient’s choice.
2. Is chiropractic care safe?
Chiropractic care is widely recognized as one of the safest drugless, noninvasive forms of health care available for the treatment of nerve, muscle and joint pain. Chiropractic care can provide great benefits while comparatively done with minimal risk. Doctors of chiropractic are well trained professionals who provide patients with safe, effective care for a variety of common conditions. Their extensive education prepares them to identify patients who have special risk factors and to ensure those patients receive the most appropriate care, even if that requires referral to a medical specialist.
3. Do I need a referral from a primary care physician to see a chiropractor?
No, you may directly contact our office to schedule an appointment; either via phone or online scheduling from our website to “Book an Appointment”.
4. What should I expect during my first visit to Skopp Chiropractic?
First, Dr Skopp will spend time talking with you about your health concerns or injury issues. Subsequently, Dr Skopp will do an exam to determine the source(s) of your problem(s). Once that is determined you will receive your first treatment to start you on your way to feeling better and moving to better health.
5. How can chiropractic care improve sports performance?
Dr Skopp has been a provider and has previously instructed Active Release Techniques (ART). ART is the leading provider of non-invasive treatment for soft-tissue and nerve issues, such as strains, sprains, and musculoskeletal disorders. This hands-on, movement-based approach swiftly alleviates pain and restores function, ensuring fuller, faster recovery compared to traditional therapy methods. ART can be used to keep soft tissues free from tightness there by creating more efficient body mechanics. Less energy is used and there is less resistance while moving, so sports performance can more readily improve.
In addition, chiropractic can improve joint mobility through mobilization and manipulation. In combination with ART, it is a winning combination for athletes.
6. What types of injuries can be treated with sports chiropractic?
This is a very extensive list. If it is not a fracture, dislocation or complete tear of the tissues, chiropractic should be a top consideration for treatment.
7. What techniques do chiropractors use for adjustments?
The big goal of chiropractic treatment is to restore movement and improve function. There are many methods or techniques that can be utilized. Dr Skopp will determine the best approach for your issues and your body type and has manty different “tools” in his toolbox. He takes into consideration your health status and age before providing any treatment to determine what would be the best approach for you. If you are looking for a specific technique, ask us. If we don’t use that technique, we will refer you to a provider that does.
8. How does chiropractic/acupuncture/Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) support overall wellness?
Since chiropractic can keep joints, muscles and nerves moving and free from tightness and restriction, your body’s wellbeing can be more easily expressed.
Acupuncture and TCM can help release blocked pathways in your body’s underlying vital force and energy system called Qi (pronounced Chee). This Qi travels through invisible channels called meridians. Acupuncture needles can move stuck Qi which prevents greater health and can cause pain.
9. What is the role of nutrition in chiropractic care?
The body functions using chemical (food, hormones), physical (structure) and electrical (energy, nerves). Therefore, nutrition is one angle to look at when looking at overall health. But nutrition is complex and needs to be individualized. As a chiropractor, I can help with basic nutrition to make sure you are on track to heal. If you require more in-depth evaluation, we recommend seeing a nutritionist.
10. Is acupuncture effective for chronic pain?
Yes, acupuncture can help with pain. Pain is defined as stagnant Qi (energy). Once you move the Qi with acupuncture, the pain can be relieved. But pain relief is only a small part of the vast health benefits that can be achieved with acupuncture.
